Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the main viruses associated with respiratory infections in various animal species. The goal of this study was to determine Respiratory Syncitial Virus (RSV) Antigen in lung tissue of pneumonic dromedary camel, using immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining method. For this purpose, the lungs of 273 male camels, (3-5 years old), were examined postslaughtering at 3 slaughter houses in Semnan Province, including Semnan, Damghan and Shahrood abattoirs, from October 2017 to March 2018. Macroscopic pneumonic lesions were detected in the lungs belonging to 181 camels. In microscopic examination, pneumonias were classified as interstitial pneumonia (n= 64) (48.83%), suppurative bronchopneumonia (n=42) (27.45%), bronchointerstitial pneumonia (n=38) (24.83%), and parasitic pneumonia (n=9) (5.88%). Immunohistochemistry (IH) staining method was applied to the total number of 144 lungs, excluding lungs with parasitic pneumonia. Of the 144 pneumonic lungs, RSV antigen was determined in 10 cases (6.94%). It was noticed that positive staining was generally present in the pneumonic areas. Although severe immunohistochemistry (IH) staining associated with RSV antigen was observed generally in the granular appearance and in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells in the airways, in bronchiole associated lymphoid cells and perivascular cell infiltrations as well, but it was more scant in the alveolar epithelium. As a conclusion, RSV antigens were found in the present study at a rate of 6.94% using the immunohistochemistry method in pneumonia cases in camels in the Semnan province and the role of this virus in the development of pneumonia in camels would be considered important. |
